Only one degree off the equator lies the tropical island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe. These striking volcanic islands that rise out of the Gulf of Guinea, got this nickname when they produced more cacao than anywhere else in the world when conquered by the Portuguese slave trade. Today the descendants have begun healing from their past, and each generation has made progress in protecting their treasured island culture.
Príncipe is certified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a global program to foster the conservation of biological and cultural diversity to promote societal development. This is important for this remote small island country as it means no large chain business can encroach on the truly pristine, almost Jurassic, coastline and rainforest.
Activities abound for all ages, and relaxation is practically guaranteed. Hike deep through the jungle amongst the breadfruit & plantain trees to a natural waterfall (jump in!) and spend the afternoon snorkeling clear warm waters or at the spa getting a massage.
High end, sustainable tourism is a key driver of the economy here in this unspoiled land that time forgot.
Our pro tip: Travel in January for warm days and sea turtle hatchlings!
Fondly,
