Encountering Chimpanzees in Western Tanzania

I’m often asked about my favorite place in Africa. I’m still not convinced there can be a final answer to this question, but one memorable place that I’ve been fortunate to travel to more than once, is Mahale National Park on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

The adventure begins with the unforgettable boat ride across the lake approaching Greystoke Mahale, the “jungle-chic” lodge on the shore backed by the forested mountains. Home to the “M” group of wild chimpanzees, who have been studied and habituated since the 1960s, this is a highlight experience. Climbing up in the roadless forest to spend time with this entertaining group of primates is always worth the effort.

The camp has records of the group that read like an old family diary. And when you’re not in the forest observing the dynamics of our primate cousins, you are relaxing on the beach or on a dhow cruising the lake. Staying in the unique and very comfortable bandas with ensuite bathrooms, made from old dhows all with beach and lake views, is a treat for any intrepid traveler.
