Devil's Pool at Victoria Falls

Zambia, October, 2011Victoria Falls View from Livingstone Island: Carol Oken

By Carol Oken

You may have see photos or YouTube videos of people perched on the edge of Victoria Falls, the largest curtain of water in the world.  It seems obvious that these are crazy, thrill-seekers who are probably bungee jumping later that afternoon.  Yes, there are lots of adrenalin-pumping activities on offer at Victoria Falls, but I'm here to tell you that the Devil's Pool reports are somewhat misleading.  I was just there and would certainly recommend this activity to our Duffle & Compass clients! Just before swimming to Devil's Pool

The flow of the mighty Zambezi River is lower from about mid-August to mid-December.  At this time of year visitors are able walk out from Livingstone Island, which is in the middle of the river, and swim to a place where you can then jump in, or ease down into the Devil's Pool.  What you don't see in the pictures is the rock barrier that keeps you from being swept over the edge.  I'm sure the view that visitors have from the opposite side of the falls -- the Zimbabwe side -- looks really scary.  However, when you are in the pool it is thrilling and the guides make you feel very safe.  You are pulled back against the current to climb out of the pool.  The guides then swim with you back the same way to Livingstone Island.  Our brave group & guide

This activity is expertly guided for a limited number of guests in each group.  They work with each person to make sure that everyone has a safe and fun experience.  We book this activity with the exclusive provider who is licensed to operate this activity.

I can't wait to go again.  Next time I'm going to jump in!
