Skeleton Coast

4 or 5 Day Itineraries

Skeleton Coast: Dana Allen

The Skeleton Coast Park is one of our planet's most inhospitable, but hauntingly beautiful places. If you are looking to spend four or five days in an uninhabited, wild place, this could be for you! Here you will find everything from roaring sand dunes and windswept plains, to towering canyons and saltpans, plus seal colonies and one of the most productive fishing grounds anywhere.

Because this is one of the most remote and inaccessible areas anywhere in Africa, access is only by air. You have a choice of a four-day safari (departing every Wednesday), or a five-day safari (departing every Saturday).

Skeleton Coast Tented Camp: Dana Allen

On this safari, you will visit the most isolated, beautiful, remote (and private) northern sector of the park, from just north of Mowe Bay to just south of the Kunene River. The Government and the park authorities lease out this northern third of the park for low volume, exclusive safaris. Wilderness Safaris operates Skeleton Coast Camp, an exclusive, luxury tented camp in a private area of 660,000 acres within the Skeleton Coast National Park. The terrain is rugged and harsh and the scenery is some of the most spectacular in Southern Africa. The camp is built on an island in the dry Khumib riverbed, just inland from the Atlantic coastline. Each of the six tents is large, roomy and has a en-suite bathroom. A wonderful, old gnarled Leadwood tree offers shelter from the elements, and makes for a shady outdoor dining area.

 Elephant Affection: Dana Allen

Daily excursions may include visits to the clay castles of the Hoarusib River, Rocky Point, the roaring dunes, lichen fields, seal colonies, Himba villages, shipwreck sites and secret water seeps that attract wildlife like oryx, springbok, giraffe, ostrich, brown hyena, jackal and other smaller mammals. This is not considered a game viewing safari. It is a true desert experience and you will be focusing on its unique ecology and its wonderful scenery. You will enjoy game viewing, but deserts by their very nature cannot host large concentrations of wildlife. Walking also plays a part in the activities; due to the pristine nature of this area many parts are accessible only on foot, as vehicle tracks can damage the environment.
