Rivers of Kaokoland
10 Day Sample Itinerary

Here is an original adventure, far off the beaten track with lots of flexibility and activities. This is geared to those who would enjoy a free-ranging safari with a non-scheduled camping route that is determined by the dynamics of nature. This safari is guided by an experienced Namibian guide who will share his passion and in-depth knowledge of this land with you.
The dry river systems of the arid Namibian northwest are vital oases for elephant and other desert-adapted wildlife. These hidden life supports form the basis of an innovative travel route, where you spend six days exploring one of the most remote and exciting regions in Africa. Animal movements and location dictate where the "wild" campsites and areas of focus will be. This incredible journey takes place in Kaokoland, an area between the stunning isolation of Serra Cafema Camp on the Kunene River and Etosha National Park. Activities include meeting the local Himba people, dune quad biking and boating on the Kunene River. You will experience community-based conservation first-hand.

Rivers of Kaokoland - Detailed Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive early at Windhoek International Airport where you will meet your guide and depart by road to the Etosha National Park area where you will spent your first night. Ongava Tented Camp is a vintage-styled tented camp with eight luxury, en-suite tents. All have overhead fan, flush toilet and open air, hot shower. Double door fronts allow views of the bush and waterhole. Meals are enjoyed in the thatched dining area that overlooks an active waterhole.
Days 2 - 6
After breakfast, you depart by vehicle westwards towards the linear oases of the Namibian northwest. The river systems here hold more surface water and support more vegetation for desert game. Exploring from the Khumib to the Ombonde and Hoanib rivers, these systems often serve as migratory routes for game;
your encounters thus are diverse, different and exciting. So specialized is the area that behavior of the same species of bird is often different from one river system to the next.
You will meet the local custodians of Kaokoland, the Himba nomadic peoples, explore almost every geological sequence, from the oldest to the youngest, and experience community-based tourism first hand.
You will camp in two or three different sites, depending on wildlife movements. These camps are always erected before your arrival and fully serviced during your stay.
Days 8 & 9
Making your way across country through the last of the desert tracks northwards, you arrive at, Serra Cafema. This is one of the most remote destinations in all of Africa, perched on the banks of the Kunene River near the northern border of Namibia. The camp is set under the shade of ancient Albia trees with views of the Kunene river valley. There
are nine canvas and thatched chalets on decks, each with its own en-suite bathroom. You can fall asleep listening to the gurgling water sounds from the cataract downstream from camp. Activities include traversing the sand dunes on carefully guided quad-bike excursions that tread lightly on the dunes, boating and birding on the Kunene River. Walking in the remote mountain and river valleys are also a highlight. Serra Cafema is often visited by nearby native Ovahimba families, providing guests with the opportunity to learn about their lifestyle and traditions.
Day 10
Your adventurous journey ends this morning with a flight back to Windhoek Eros Airport, enjoying the magnificent and vast landscapes from the air along the way.
