Sossusvlei area Camps & Lodges
Sossusvlei is the in the heart of the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world. This is the place to see the awesome dunes that have inspired photographers and filmmakers for years. The light and shadows produced in the early hours of the morning and again near sunset are stunningly beautiful.
The Nama people named this place Sossusvlei, which means "a gathering place of water." There is a clay pan in the midst of the enormous dunes that fills with water every few years when there has been enough rain. The famous dunes are the highest in the world, rising 1,000 feet above the plains.
Kulala Wilderness Reserve
This 51,870-acre private reserve is located near Sossusvlei in the heart of the Namib Desert. This area is highly renowned for its physical beauty. This is the only reserve with direct access to Sossusvlei.

Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp

This camp is located in one of the most remarkable sites in the Namib Desert, set near the top of a mountain in the private reserve. Guests find a private, comfortable refuge with panoramic views. There are nine en-suite guest rooms, (including one honeymoon chalet) with hot and cold running water, flush toilets and private plunge pool. Activities include early morning excursions in 4x4 vehicles to the magnificent Sossusvlei dunes and the "vlei" itself. Wonderful desert breakfasts are served under camel-thorn acacias surrounded by the dunes. Ballooning over the Namib is offered at an additional cost.

Kulala Desert Lodge

This lodge lies in the heart of the Namib Desert on private property bordering the Namib Naukluft National Park. There are magnificent views of the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei as well as magnificent mountain scenery and vast open plains.

There are 15 thatched and canvas chalets or "Kulalas (Kulala in the Namibian language "oshiwambo" means "to sleep") with en-suite bathrooms and showers are set on wooden platforms to provide maximum airflow. An option for outdoor enthusiasts is that bedrolls can be moved to the rooftop to sleep under the stars. There are two family rooms which can sleep up to five. Activities include nature walks, including the Tsauchab River Trail, and drives to Sossusvlei and Sesriem. An early morning balloon safari (offered at an extra fee) ends with a champagne breakfast at your landing site.

Little Kulala, the flagship of Namibia's extraordinary Sossusvlei area, has for several years been attracting informed travelers, who enjoy the
first-rate facilities, charming hospitality and nearby proximity to the towering sand dunes. This acclaimed Wilderness Safaris desert retreat, has climate-controlled villas each with fully stocked bar fridge, inside and outside showers, and plunge pool. The 11 stylish, thatched villas merge impeccably into the timeless desert landscape, with exquisite fixtures and furnishings. Each villa has a rooftop sky bed for romantic stargazing and sleep outs. A waterhole in front of the main building gives the opportunity to see oryx, springbok, bat eared fox, aardwolf, ostrich and jackals. Spotted hyenas can be heard at night.

This camp has 10 Meru style tents tents on elevated wooden decks with stone en-suite bathrooms. A staircase leading up to the flat rooftop above the bathroom provides the ideal setting to sleep under the stars on a provided bedroll. The interiors are simple yet comfortable, with 220v lighting and electricity. There is one family unit tent. Lanterns light the main camp areas at night.

The camp sits at the foot of a rock escarpment, facing west with great sunset views. On the edge of the oldest desert in the world, wildlife here is sparse but fascinating. Sightings of springbok, gemsbok, ostrich, bat-eared fox and aardwolf are exciting in these rugged conditions. Activities include early morning guided game drives to the Sossusvlei dunes, nature drives and walks on the reserve, day trips into the Namib-Naukluft mountains and early morning ballooning (at an extra cost).

Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge
NamibRand Nature Reserve
When you arrive at the private air strip you have a short, six minute ride to this luxury lodge, designed to capture the splendor and solitude of the desert. Set in a 445,000 acre private reserve at the foot of a mountain the lodge overlooks the starkly beautiful Namib Desert. The ten spacious, air-conditioned villas have glass-encased en-suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, split-level bedroom with a star-viewing skylight over the bed, living room with fireplace, stocked bar, shaded private veranda and a service-intercom to the main lodge. The swimming pool is fed by water from an underground spring.

There is a nearby waterhole that animals visit at sunset. Sossusvlei offers a range of exhilarating activities including scenic game drives, quad biking through the desert, guided walks, picnic excursions to the famous Sossusvlei sand dunes and hot air balloon trips. There is a highly sophisticated telescope here for stargazing.
