Expedition to Botswana & Victoria Falls
Duffle & Compass Exclusive 2011 Safari
10 days/9 nights
A custom-tailored version of this itinerary was done July 25 to August 4, 2011 as a private safari with guide Peace Shamuka and escorted by founder Carol Oken.
This journey begins in the world’s largest inland delta, Botswana’s Okavango, set in the heart of the Kalahari Desert. The water levels are at their highest from June to August and the daytime temperatures range in the high 70s. You’ll glide through the channels in dug-out canoes called mokoros observing the prolific birdlife and exploring the islands created by the seasonal ebb and flow of the water. Fly like an eagle to the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, one of the best places for game viewing in Southern Africa and travel overland to Savute, where the open savanna grasslands are full of zebra and wildebeest. Lion and other predator viewing is sure to thrill! Your last camp is in Chobe National Park, renown for massive elephant herds. The finale is Victoria Falls, one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world. Walk in the footsteps of the famous adventurer David Livingstone, as you witness the largest curtain of water on the planet.

2 Nights at a private camp in the Okavango Delta

Day 3 Moremi Wildlife Reserve
You’ll fly over the Delta to Khwai in the Moremi Reserve which was the first protected area in Africa to be established by local people. This area of the Delta features the permanent waterways as well as riverine forests, tall mopane woodlands and floodplains fringed with majestic palms. The diversity of habitats provides some exciting game viewing by vehicle and mokoro.
2 Nights at a private camp in the Moremi Reserve
Day 5 Chobe National Park – Savute
This morning you’ll set out overland on an extended game drive to Savute. This area is renowned for lion and other predator viewing. Look for leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena and African wild dog. Huge animal concentrations are drawn to this area’s water holes during the dry season.
2 Nights at a private camp in Savute

Day 7 Chobe National Park – Serondela
Your final campsite is set in the heart of elephant country where you will spend hours watching the huge herds in and around the Chobe River. Relax on a private boat cruise to catch the sunset one evening. Game drives in this area will certainly produce a large variety of animal and bird sightings. If you're lucky you may spot the two antelope that cannot be encountered anywhere else in Botswana, the puku and the Chobe bushbuck.
2 Nights in a private camp in the Serondela area
Day 9 Victoria Falls
It is just a short drive to the border crossing and Victoria Falls. You will check in at The Elephant Camp in time for lunch on the terrace. From here you can see the fine spray of the mighty Victoria Falls, like a cloud across the bushveld, throwing rainbows hundreds of feet in the air. The local tribal people call it Mosi-Oa-Tunya – which translates to the “smoke that thunders.” Later you will be taken for a tour of the Falls and a sunset cruise along the banks of the Zambezi river.
Day 10
You will want to make time to meet the Wild Horizons elephants this morning before departing for Victoria Falls airport for your onward flight.
1 Night at Elephant Camp
